Signals that still matter

  • Domain authority and backlinks. AI assistants use search engines under the hood for retrieval, so high-DR pages still pull weight.
  • Indexable content. If Google can't crawl it, ChatGPT can't either (at least for retrieval-augmented generation).
  • Topical authority. Sites that consistently rank for a category get cited more often within that category.

Signals that matter more for AEO

  • Mention density across third-party sources. "ChatGPT mentions Brand X" is usually downstream of "five high-authority sources mention Brand X in this context." Getting featured on category directories, listicles, comparison pages, and well-known reviews has disproportionate AEO impact.
  • FAQPage and HowTo schema. LLMs love structured Q&A. A clean FAQ section often gets pulled verbatim.
  • Comparison pages. "X vs Y" pages are the highest-leverage AEO content — they directly match how buyers ask LLMs.
  • Brand mentions without backlinks. An unlinked mention used to be wasted SEO juice. For AEO it's gold.
