Why ChatGPT and Claude give different brand recommendations

Run the same prompt on ChatGPT and Claude and you'll often get different brand lists. The reasons are architectural, not arbitrary.

If you've ever asked the same question to ChatGPT and Claude back-to-back, you've noticed they give different brand recommendations. Sometimes wildly different. This isn't randomness — it's the result of architectural differences that have practical implications for your AEO strategy.

The four reasons they diverge

1. Different training data cutoffs and weights

OpenAI and Anthropic train on different web snapshots. The same Forbes Advisor listicle might be present in one model and absent in the other. Multiplied across thousands of category sources, this creates structurally different priors.

2. Different web search providers

ChatGPT searches via Bing's index. Claude searches via a mix of providers and increasingly its own crawler. The same query can return different top-10 results, leading to different brand mentions.

3. Different default verbosity

Claude defaults to listing more options. ChatGPT defaults to fewer. So a query that returns 8 brands on Claude might return 4 on ChatGPT, even if the underlying retrieval is similar.

4. Different system prompts and RLHF biases

OpenAI and Anthropic have trained their models with different reinforcement signals. ChatGPT is slightly more willing to make a definitive recommendation; Claude leans toward presenting alternatives.

Why this matters for AEO

If you only measure one provider, you're missing 30–50% of the picture. Many brands have radically different visibility on ChatGPT vs Claude — strong on one and invisible on the other. The fixes for each are also different.

Generally true patterns

  • Listicles dominate ChatGPT recommendations. If you're in a major listicle, you'll appear in ChatGPT more reliably than in Claude.
  • Long-form authoritative content dominates Claude. A well-written, well-cited Wired article carries more weight in Claude than in ChatGPT.
  • Reddit discussions appear more in ChatGPT. Claude is more cautious about user-generated content.
  • Original data and primary sources appear more in Claude.

The practical action

Run scans on both providers. Look at per-provider visibility separately. If you're at 25% on ChatGPT and 5% on Claude, your Claude gap is probably solvable with two long-form authoritative pieces and pursuing inclusion in editorial outlets. If you're at 5% on ChatGPT and 25% on Claude, you need to chase listicle placements and category directories.
